Excessive drinking isn’t healthy and certainly not advised for anyone of any age. That said, inevitably we attend a party or dinner where we expect to drink several glasses of wine or other alcoholic beverages, knowing that we might pay for it with a hangover the following day.
Hangover cures, which have been popular since the early 1990s, have relied largely on restoring the body’s fluid balance and blood sugar levels since the symptoms of a hangover are largely due to dehydration (alcohol is a diuretic) and hypoglycemia (the liver uses sucrose to metabolize alcohol). In addition, because alcohol is broken down in the body to toxic acetaldehyde and free radicals, any treatment must neutralize and protect the body from these toxins.
A new product, trademarked RESQWATER, debuted in 2009, and is now widely available and marketed as a scientifically formulated drink to help fend off the ill effects of a hangover. Clinical research presented at the 12th Annual Scripps Natural Supplements Conference by Medicus Research showed it is effective in reducing hangover symptoms, supporting sleep quality, and improving next day cognitive function in both men and women ages 21 to 50.
The product contains 8 ounces of water to help prevent dehydration, an amino acid called N-acetyl Cystene that helps the body convert acetaldehyde into harmless acetic acid, milk thistle that has antioxidant properties, prickly pear cactus fruit extract to reduce upset stomach, and sucrose, electrolytes, and B vitamins. It is stimulant-free, certified Kosher, gluten-free, vegan, and contains only natural and organic ingredients.
How do you use RESQWATER? An 8-ounce bottle should be drunk with every 2 to 4 drinks, and another should be consumed before bedtime. It has a slight citrus and vitamin flavor that’s more palatable if chilled. Remember, if you drink excessively, it will not cure your hangover, but it can mitigate the symptoms.
I can’t verify the product’s usefulness since I only drink in moderation. I can say from a physician’s viewpoint that the science behind it makes sense. I did buy the product and use it as directed when I dined out and drank a glass of white wine and two glasses of red in a span of four hours. I noticed no side effects and I felt rested and normal the following day. I plan to give a few bottles to others so they can test it. I will report back in time.
