Must-Try Wine of the Week: Duckhorn 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, California

Easily one of the old-guard producers in Napa Valley, the Duckhorn label is familiar to nearly all of us. Co-founded in 1976 by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent more than 30 years establishing itself as one of the premier producers of Bordeaux varietal wines. Arguably most famous for its merlot and cabernet, Duckhorn first released a sauvignon blanc in 1982.

The 2012 vintage is composed of 83 percent sauvignon blanc, and 17 percent sémillon, all sourced from 11 Napa Valley appellations. After 15 percent barrel fermentation in new oak, the wine rests sur lie (on its lees) for another 5 months in 60-gallon French oak, for additional complexity. This refreshing wine has an inviting nose of clover, and lemon and lime aromas. Quite dry on the palate, with a fleshy core of citrusy fruit and a nice crispness throughout. The juicy flavors are lightly sweet, with a lovely bit of tartness on the long finish. This is a perfect match for any white fish or lighter chicken-based dishes. Under $29.
