The name Louis Jadot, or even the Jadot label itself, is probably familiar to you. Maison Louis Jadot was founded by Louis Henry Denis Jadot in 1859. A family-owned company, it operates its own vineyards, produces and markets wine from Burgundy, and controls 670 acres of vineyards in Burgundy, including Beaujolais.
The Volnay commune lies roughly in the center of the Cote de Beaune, bordered by Pommard to the Northeast, and Meursault to the South. Volnay produces only red wines and has 26 Premier Cru vineyards. With optimal southeast exposures, these vineyards have soil that is extremely thin and chalky, and high in calcium content, producing some of the lightest and most elegant wines within the Cote de Beaune. The term “Monopole” means that Jadot controls the entire vineyard. It’s rare for only one winery to produce all the wine from an area entitled to a certain name. The term “Clos” is used when a vineyard is enclosed or walled-in.
This delicious wine is 100 percent pinot noir, and was made by Jacques Lardière, a veteran of 40 vintages. It’s medium crimson in color, with a nose of crushed flowers, pomegranate, and a light mineral scent. Flavors on the palate include pomegranate, and slightly sweetened cranberries. Given this is a very recent vintage, the wine is still a bit tightly wound and might take a decade to open fully and blossom. So be prepared to cellar it, or buy two bottles and try one now after an hour or so of decanting. At Wine Exchange and Hi-Time Cellars, $55 to $62.
