Wisdom From: A Nursery Owner On Creating a Sustainable Garden

Gary Matsuoka owns Laguna Hills Nursery in Santa Ana with his wife, Nancy. He teaches gardening classes every Saturday morning at the nursery.

How to have healthy plants …
Use real dirt. It looks like sand; the soil in nature is quartz. … We tell people keep your soil clean, water every day, fertilize them once a month, and (your plants will) grow easily.

Sustainable gardening …
It means you don’t have to throw things away. Instead of throwing away dead leaves and plants, you throw it back into the garden. It’s all nutrition (for the plants). Nature recycles dead leaves—they fall off the plants and onto the ground and all that energy and nutrition is recycled over and over.

Easy plants to grow …
Daisies, most vegetables are pretty easy; apple trees, pomegranate trees, and fig trees are probably the easiest to grow. But most anything grows easily as long as you have the right soil.
