Wisdom from An owner of A historic home

Cameron Hastings and her husband are remodeling their 1928 Ole Hansen Spanish revival home
in San Clemente.

On the need to remodel …
The motivating factors were the old cast-iron plumbing and the knob and tube wiring. Since we were opening up the walls anyway, we decided to do a complete remodel. We’re reconnecting the upstairs apartment to the rest of the house and converting it into a master suite.

What won’t be missed …
The 1960s kitchen is horrible. It’s actually liberating that it’s not original to the house. We can tear it out and start over.

Staying true to the home’s character …
There aren’t a lot of original fixtures left, so we have a blank slate. We’re salvaging materials from the period and using historic reproductions. We’d love to use authentic, salvaged light fixtures, but we’re not sure they’ll be up to code.

Why it’s worth it …
It’s a big undertaking, but this place has a charm you can’t get with other houses.
