A third generation Californian, Grant Kirkpatrick, founding partner of KAA Design, is renowned in the architecture world with A-list clientele that includes actors Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, and fashion designer Paul Marciano, among many others.
“As an architect, I spend my life looking at property, thinking about how the people who live there will use it and about how to connect them to their land”, Kirkpatrick says.
In his new book, “California Contemporary: The Houses of Grant C. Kirkpatrick and KAA Design”, he presents 24 custom homes that exemplify the California dream, including his own property, a nautically inspired home perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, an art collector’s home, a soaring cantilevered hillside home and a “tree house” set on a plateau conceived as a series of linked pavilions interspersed with gardens.
With over 160 beautiful color photographs, this monograph is an ode to sophisticated modern living in southern California. It explores several themes such as seamless indoor-outdoor living; form, scale and proportion; whimsy and imperfection.
“It gives me a lot of joy to build homes that people love living in”, Kirkpatrick says. “It gives me even more joy when those homes also connect the owners with their love of nature—or even deepen it.”

About Grant C. Kirkpatrick, KAA Design
A third generation Californian, Grant Kirkpatrick draws his energy and inspiration from his home state’s progressive ideals and optimistic embrace of the new. He has been the visionary force behind KAA Design, the architectural firm he founded 30 years ago. Grant and his team continue to enjoy elevating the human spirit through the benefits and authenticity of warm contemporary residential design.
Raised in Palos Verdes, Grant earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Southern California and became a licensed architect at the age of 24. His entrepreneurial spirit and passion for design led him to found Kirkpatrick Associates Architects just a few years later in 1988. Since then, the award-winning firm has completed projects for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Christie’s auction house, Hugo Boss stores across the nation, master plans and renovations for the Jonathan Club, the Santa Monica Beach Club, the Manhattan Country Club, and other award winning commercial and hospitality projects.
The firm now focuses exclusively on custom homes, including residences for Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Kirk Kerkorian, Matt Damon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The Pritzker Family, and numerous other coastal retreats, city-view estates, and vacation properties for a broad range of passionate clients. His work has been published in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, The New York Times, L.A. Times, Coastal Living, Sunset magazine, and the Robb Report, among others. KAA Design has won numerous awards, including many AIA awards and the “Good Design is Good Business” award from Architectural Record. Kirkpatrick has developed a comprehensive line of outdoor furniture for Design Within Reach and a line of prefab homes.
His second book, California Contemporary: The Houses of Grant C. Kirkpatrick and KAA Design will be published in May 2018 by Princeton Architectural Press.
