UCI Doctoral Candidate Mya Le Thai on her Energy Storage Breakthrough

Imagine a battery that can last a lifetime without being replaced. Thanks to research by Thai and her team, we might be one step closer to that reality. By coating gold nanowires in manganese dioxide and applying a special gel, Thai was able to dramatically increase the amount of times a capacitor could be cycled (charged and discharged). “The gel prevented the nanowires from cracking,” says Thai, who, along with Chair of the Chemistry Department Reginald Penner, published their findings in the American Chemical Society’s Energy Letters.
