Insider Secret: Christmas Cove

How did this South Laguna beach get its name?

Certain weather and ocean conditions—which often appear around Christmastime—can create a temporary sand bar and surf break at this small beach near Blue Lagoon and Montage Laguna Beach. According to Marine Safety Capt. Tom Trager, it all began over the holidays during the El Niño years of 1982 and ’83. A few local kids, with two weeks of vacation and a great new surf spot, began calling the beach “Christmas Cove.” About eight years ago, a lifeguard tower was placed there, and the name became official. The break still reappears from time to time, like Brigadoon.
