The beloved Jimmie DeFore Dance Center in Costa Mesa, which trained thousands of dancers, closed its doors for good this past weekend. But there’s a move afoot to open another studio, one that would continue the DeFore legacy of offering all dance styles, for all ages from toddlers to adults, and for all experience levels from basics to professionals. Gina Cerato, who was a soloist with Ballet Pacifica and who is a longtime local teacher (including at DeFore), has a GoFundMe campaign underway to raise $30,000. She wants to open her own studio in the same general area, fashioned in the spirit of DeFore’s. She will use the money for sprung Marley floors, mirrors, stereo systems, barres, and so on. At least 16 of DeFore’s teachers have confirmed that they would like to join her faculty. Cerato says there will also be performing opportunities for students. Her campaign is at gofundme.com/danceoc
