A spacious, light-filled lobby welcomes guests. A living wall beckons from behind the greeting desk. Rooms are given names of wildflowers and plants rather than numbers. But this is not a boutique hotel; it’s the new home of the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, which opened to patients this week, on the UC Irvine campus.

The institute, now 21,432 square feet, includes large spaces devoted to exercise and mindfulness classes as well as a gourmet teaching kitchen for lessons on nutrition. Every space adheres to the strategy behind the clinic, which is to use research, education, and a team-based approach to overall well-being, not just treating a symptom. Besides the exam and consultation rooms, there’s also a lab, a pharmacy, an education center, a conference room, an infusion suite, and more. The institute is part of the new Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences at UC Irvine.

“Our hope is that this kind of care becomes regular care,” says the institute’s executive director Shaista Malik, who is also an Anaheim native, cardiologist, and one of Orange Coast’s Kickass Women in 2020. “There’s no other place in the world that’s combining the education, patient care, and research to make this happen.”

Keep an eye out for wellness classes offered to the community, covering mindfulness, Tai Chi, and yoga. The classes are online for now, but they will likely be in person again at the beginning of 2023 in the welcoming new space.
