Opening March 29 at Segerstrom Hall, American Ballet Theatre and Pacific Symphony present the U.S. premiere of “Like Water for Chocolate,” a full-length ballet bringing the famous novel by Laura Esquivel to life.

On March 23, author Marytza K. Rubio, one of Orange Coast’s Kickass Women honorees of 2023, will lead a book discussion with curated chapter readings to bring greater awareness to both the novel and the new ballet production. Rubio, who was nominated for a 2022 National Book Award for the debut collection “Maria, Maria & Other Stories” and currently serves as vice president of community and culture at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, will guide an exploration of magical realism, magicians, and the marvelous.

The free event takes place at 6 p.m. at San Juan Capistrano Library. Guests who attend will receive free copies of Laura Esquivel’s “Like Water for Chocolate,” and refreshments inspired by the novel will be available courtesy of Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
