From the return of Descanso’s plancha dining experience to new locations of beloved cafes and eateries, here is our weekly guide to the latest in O.C.’s dining scene.


Garden Grove

New to Steelcraft Garden Grove, this counter offers everything from Roman-style square pizza to focaccia paninis and daily pasta specials. Pair your meal with an Italian soda.

BLK Dot Coffee
The coffee shop, known for its Vietnamese coffee, opened a fourth location in Irvine at VKCC, a 24-acre workplace community. The counter-style cafe has plenty of outdoor seating.

Cafe Gratitude
Newport Beach

A to-go outpost at Gracias Madre recently opened featuring plant-based, seasonal fare by executive chef Dreux Ellis. There is a limited outdoor seating area to enjoy breakfast and lunch. Open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

THH Sandwiches

The newest O.C. location of the banh mi shop has a buy two get one free special on all items (except the pork meatloaf) all month. On top of Vietnamese-style sandwiches, you can also delight in steamed flour sheets, spring rolls, and sticky rice.


Costa Mesa
The plancha grills are back in action with new safety precautions including social distancing between parties and between the taquero and guests. The restaurant, which was named one of our Best New Restaurants in 2019, is open for regular dine-in service and curbside takeout. Stop by on Wednesdays for $5 wine by the glass, half off select bottles, no corkage fee, and live music.

Orange and Brea
Both locations will be celebrating the Old Towne Orange location’s 10th anniversary with giveaways, throwback menu items, as well as a birthday cake-themed frozen custard.

Taste of Japan
Sample a variety of Japanese specialties, including ramen, takoyaki, and yakitori, at the Taste of Japan in Anaheim. Pre-order your food and drink online and pick up on Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. at Bizen Beer.
