Get Your Malasadas and Local Aloha at Fill in Costa Mesa

Move over churros and doughnuts, malasadas are on the rise. The Portuguese fried-dough wonders from Hawaii are now as close as Costa Mesa. Delicate and made to order, the sugar-dusted confections from Fill are the passion of Hawaii-born founder James Mullis. Get the fresh, warm pastries filled with a choice of strawberry jam, taro blueberry, haupia (coconut custard), or malted chocolate. For orders of two dozen or more, call ahead. When they invariably sell out, switch to artisan ice cream boasting island flavors such as butter-roasted pineapple, Kona coffee, and POG (passion fruit, orange, guava). Closed Monday. 1767 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa, 949-873-5073, eatfill.com
