Got my August Wine Spectator and it’s the restaurant awards issue for the world’s best wine lists. Look under California “South/Other Cities” to see which O.C. restaurants made the list. Lots of the usual suspects including Anaheim White House, The Hobbit, Flemings, Morton’s, and The Winery.
Some of the county’s newer restaurants made a fine showing: Andrea, AnQi, The Capital Grille, and Seasons 52. Those are nice to see but what really surprised me was the inclusion of wine bars: Tannins Restaurant & Wine Bar in San Juan Capistrano, The Twisted Vine in Fullerton, Versai the Wine Bar in Yorba Linda, and the Wine Gallery Cafe in Corona del Mar. Pretty cool. And this joint so close to my house in Huntington that I’ve never been to—Patty’s Place in Seal Beach.
I used to get upset when my favorites weren’t listed but I’ve matured and realized, they’ve got to enter to win. (Like, where’s Antonello? I think Steve Ebol does a great job). Wine bars aside, we’ll know it’s gotten really down and dirty when we see Trabuco Oaks Steakhouse in there; they’ve always listed a ton of name-brand California cabs, Silver Oak and others you don’t expect to see plunked down on tables decked out in denim. Does anyone remember if they’re made the list in the past? Comment if you missed your faves or if you’ve been to Patty’s Place and can recommend it.—Anne Valdespino
