Casa Barilla Opens at South Coast Plaza

Barilla, known as the pasta of Italy since 1877, opens fast-casual Casa Barilla in the Sears wing of South Coast Plaza. The stylish space, the first West Coast outpost of the company’s three restaurants in New York City, showcases glass-faced cabinets filled with various pastas such as fusilli, orecchiette, and tortiglioni; a dozen tables plus two communal ones; and an impressive carved-wood wall installation depicting wheat stalks and the words “WhEat LOVE PASTA.” The menu, served continuously through lunch and dinner, lists a dozen pasta dishes, from straightforward spaghetti al pomodoro to elaborate orecchiette pugliesi with Italian sausage, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, pecorino cheese, chiles, and roasted garlic. Request your dish gluten-free or made with whole-grain, organic, or protein-plus pasta. Also on the menu: flatbread-like pizzas, salads, paninis, and several soups and desserts. The restaurant’s motto is “Give people the food you would give to your own children.” Italian children apparently eat well. 3333 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, 657-205-1025,
