Bites: Updated Benedict at Selanne Steak, and Hello Kitty With a Kick

Updated Benedict at Selanne Steak Tavern.

Befitting Benedict
Most people associate Selanne Steak Tavern with … steak. But the brunch has us revisiting eggs Benedict. The verdict: We should permanently trade the English muffin halves typical of the dish for croissants. Selanne’s Benedict also uses Nueske’s ham in place of Canadian bacon and adds avocado and tomato marmalade to its perfectly poached eggs and house hollandaise ($22). Gotta have steak? Start your day with those poached eggs alongside prime filet mignon, crispy pork belly, and toast points. ($34). 1464 S. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, 949-715-9881

Kitty With A Kick
Hello Kitty has plenty of fans who are older than 21. So when the first Hello Kitty Grand Cafe opened at Irvine Spectrum Center, it went beyond rose-gold bow headbands and hot matcha minidoughnuts to superb themed cocktails such as the Hello Kit-Tea: Suntory Toki Whisky with jasmine tea, lime, Depaz syrup, yuzu, and cream. The drink arrives with a side of jasmine tea leaves (for aroma) and a matcha macaron. Enjoy cocktails or afternoon tea by reservation only in the floor-to-ceiling-pink Bow Room. Also on the list: the Whisker Sour and You Had Me at Hello. 860 Spectrum Center Drive, Irvine
