Bite: Barley Forge Brewing Co.

Costa Mesa’s first commercial production brewery has launched near The Lab and The Camp, and it’s already bustling. Former lawyer and longtime home-brewer Greg Nylen is president and cofounder, and Kevin Buckley, founder of San Diego’s Latitude 33, heads brewing operations. One Louder is one of our favorite double IPAs anywhere; The Patsy, a rye-coconut stout, is a surprising standout; and The Black Dahlia, a Belgian-style dark ale, has double the alcohol of many of the offerings. Choose from about a dozen styles for the five-taster flight. Chef Brandon Finamore uses an artisanal purveyor to create a menu of about a dozen items ($3 to $15), from elevated bar snacks to a charcuterie and cheese plate on weeknights, and onsite barbecue such as lamb sliders on weekends.

Most beer tasters $2; full pour, $6; small growler, $8; large growler, $16; One Louder and The Black Dahlia $3, $7, $14, and $28.
