Here are some our favorite doughnut shops in the county serving up plant-based versions of the classic sweet snack.
The Donuttery
Open 24 hours, this popular shop has traditional doughnuts as well as a huge selection of vegan donuts in various categories such as yeast, cake, enriched (a brioche-like dough), and gluten-free. Their most popular vegan flavors are PB&J, pistachio cake, vanilla bean custard, guava malasadas, and apple fritter. The Donuttery does a great job of catering to those with specific dietary needs. Beyond their traditional and vegan options, they have regular gluten-free and keto options as well. 17420 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach, 714-847-7000, thedonutteryhb.com
Good Town Doughnuts
This shop has two locations—the original one in Japan, and the second one at the LAB in Costa Mesa. Their doughnuts are unique in that they have a brioche-style texture, making them lighter and airier than a traditional doughnut. Although they have an ample selection of non-vegan doughnuts, most notably Nutella, Valrhona chocolate crunch, and maple bacon, they have an equal selection of plant-based ones, including classic glazed, matcha, mango coconut, lemon poppy seed, and their most popular flavor, the vegan triple berry. 2930 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, 714-486-1870, instagram.com/goodtowndoughnutsusa
Friendly Donuts
Living up to their name, the customer service here is warm and inviting, and their donuts put a smile on your face. Open 24 hours, Friendly’s wide variety of doughnuts are constantly being baked fresh. Whether you’re looking for glazed, strawberry, cinnamon, maple, or more, there’s a vegan option available. They even have vegan doughnut holes. The most popular flavors are their sprinkled doughnuts and cereal doughnuts. 4442 E. Chapman Ave., Orange, 714-538-4942, instagram.com/friendlydonuts
OC Crafted
This is another doughnut shop that innovates its own unique vegan flavors. Try their vanilla cake doughnuts dipped in flavors such as birthday cake, salted caramel, cookies & cream, pistachio green tea, or chai. Swing by to try some of OC Crafted’s seasonal flavors for fall, including whiskey tangerine, peppermint cream, and vegan pumpkin pie, a customer favorite. 18011 Newhope St., Fountain Valley, 714-277-3656, occrafteddonuts.com
Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee
While this shop is focused on rotating flavors of non-vegan specialty doughnuts, they always have a vegan option on their menu that changes every month. Past flavors include huckleberry and pumpkin chai. The vegan flavor for September is vanilla chai, which also happens to be gluten-free. Pair their doughnuts with coffee, which can be made with non-dairy milks. 270 E. 17th St., Costa Mesa, 949-873-5424, sidecardoughnuts.com
