We move from sci-fi fans to sophisticates. John Jacob Astor IV’s iconic and lavish Beaux-Arts hotel helped transform New York into a glamorous city, and is said to have served the first martini. But it foundered during Prohibition and eventually closed it’s doors. For decades the building provided little more than office space, but it has been refurbished and resurrected as a luxury hotel once more.
