The Dutch temperament, if there is such a thing, is generally low-key and practical. But a strain of “Why the heck not?” runs deep. We can thank this streak of whimsy for Holland’s two Zandhotels—hotels made entirely of sand, in honor of the annual Sand Sculpture Festival in Brabant. Fully furnished one-room suites, with en suite bathrooms, are tucked inside 26-foot high sand sculptures. Interiors are mellow, atmospheric, reminiscent of adobe, and yes, you’ll still get your TV and free Wi-Fi. Accommodations are temporary, and for this season are fully booked. But new structures will be built for next year, and plans are afoot to construct similar sand hotels in Germany and the UK. zandhotel.nl/
