CHIASA MARUYAMA
Huntington Beach High School (HBHS) Surf Team “Frosh”
Birthday: February 26, 2001
Why she loves HB: I’ve been surfing in Huntington Beach since I was 4 years old! It’s my home break, and I know everyone out in the water. I love how beachy my hometown is. There are so many friendly people everywhere you go.
Favorite surf spot: The pier. I like surfing northside during the summer and southside during the winter because of the different seasonal swells.
Local tip: Spend a day at the beach, then shop Main Street. There are so many cool boutiques and tons of great food options. Definitely visit our most popular surf shop, Huntington Surf & Sport!
KANOA IGARASHI
Pro Surfer // 2015 U.S. Open of Surfing Champion
Birthday: October 1, 1997
Why he loves HB: I love the vibe and energy. It’s great to be able to surf with your friends, then walk up Main Street and have a bite to eat—then rinse and repeat all the way through dinner. I get into a nice routine when I’m home.
Favorite surf spot: For sure the southside of the pier. All of my friends surf there—it’s the spot.
Local tip: Go for a surf, and eat at Sugar Shack. I’ve probably done it a million times. It’s a real cultural thing here.

Birthday: January 5, 1985
Why he loves HB: I’ve been surfing in Huntington Beach for 18 years! I love surfing here because there are tons of great surfers who push me to be better—and there are always consistent waves. Home has everything I need: waves, good food, friends, family, Huntington Surf & Sport, Sugar Shack—just to name a few!
Favorite surf spot: I prefer wintertime southside of the pier. Fun left into the pier, and the right gets really fun.
Local tip: Check out the biggest surfboard ever at the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum.
JERICHO POPPLER
World Champion “Wavedancer” // Surfing Walk Of Fame Inductee
Birthday: December 13, 1951
Why she loves HB: I’ve been a local at the pier for more than 50 years! Huntington Beach offers the best and most beautiful beachbreak waves in Southern California, along with excellent weather and favorable winds.
Favorite surf spot: It’ll always be the pier, as the pilings provide a unique sandbar and current rotation back out into the challenging lineup.
Local tip: It’s all about the pier! Hit Duke’s at sunset, walk the pier, and don’t miss the farmers market there every Friday. I personally adore the old town
feeling on 5th Street, where you’ll discover swanky shops.
