As University of California, Irvine vice chancellor for health affairs and CEO of UC Irvine Health, Dr. Howard Federoff is helping define the future of healthcare. Federoff previously held top administrative positions at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and University of Rochester in New York, but UCI has long been on his radar because of its work in translational research, applying the findings of basic science to enhance human health. “I had seen the evolution of translational science at UCI, and I was impressed with the caliber of work and the leadership here,” said Federoff. “Having started in this combined role, I find myself thinking every day: how do we blend our academic, research and clinical missions together so we have the greatest impact?” Widely acclaimed for cutting-edge research and expertise in patient care, UC Irvine Health has the county’s only academic medical center and medical school. Federoff notes that the principal distinction between UC Irvine Health and other OC healthcare entities: “We just don’t monitor local, national or global research—we actually conduct research, which means we are delivering the highest quality care often at the very edge of the envelope, where the research is being done.”
