No. 6 Urbana
I
t’s Dia de los Muertos every day at Urbana, the Packing House’s most colorful, exciting latecomer. Owner Javier Cuadra and executive chef Ernie Alvarado label their cuisine Mexican Gas-tronomy, defining this as modern street food, which the concise menu of seasonal eats illustrates. Half cantina, half (intentionally) dark hole-in-the-wall, the moody 50-seat surroundings suit the menu of enchiladas Suizas, the day’s-catch ceviche, or golden dorado tacos, washed down with a fresh-juice Paloma cocktail or excellent agua chile micheladas. Ask about the chef’s special, inspired by the day’s freshest ingredients. Or go stealth with the off-menu chicken tinga tacos starring shredded braised chicken seasoned with Alvarado’s tomato-rich sauce.
FIELD NOTES Every tortilla is handmade, fresh to order, an upgrade you can taste in every bite. Tortilla fiends should order accordingly.
