Artful Dressing by Luisa Fernanda Espinosa & Son Alonso Mateo

Instagram sensations Luisa Fernanda Espinosa and son Alonso Mateo model spring fashion favorites at their artful Laguna Beach home.

On getting into fashion through dressing her son:
“I’ve always had it in myself as well. Art is what I studied and loved. I started photographing, and that’s when it just took off. Maybe it was uncommon to see a little boy in sunglasses. I think everything just fell into place by accident. I was not expecting people to react to it in that way. Still to this day, it’s strange.”

On her personal style:
“I love to mix and match things that people wouldn’t think of wearing. Adding in an unexpected element to an outfit is my favorite thing to do.”

On collections she covets:
“Balenciaga, Celine, Gucci, and Vetements are my favorites at the moment.”

Luisa Fernanda Espinosa’s favorite places to shop

The artwork in this photo is from a series that was recently on display in the exhibit “Radical Home,” curated by Espinosa for Salt Fine Art in Laguna Beach. Some of the pieces were on loan from Espinosa’s personal collection.

On what the 9-year-old likes to do for fun:
“Oh, gee. I like doing Legos. And making comic books. I started copying ‘Captain Underpants’ first, and then I started making my own stuff.”

On his comic book characters:
“There was one I really liked, but then I stopped making him. I just got bored with it. I said, ‘Hey, you know what, this guy’s getting old. I gotta move on.’ ”

On who picks out his clothes—him or his mother:
“She only helps me a bit.”

… and now a word from his mom:
“Mateo’s love of suits comes from his dad. He’s also very decisive about wanting his sunglasses or comfy loafers.
