3 Styling Tips From Holiday Decorator Anne Michaelsen

Anne Michaelsen offers interior design and holiday decorating services through her namesake firm in Newport Beach. She shares how to spruce up your home for the holidays.

1. Keep it simple …

We truly believe that less is more—even for the holidays. A few key stylish seasonal pieces, fresh winter greens, and a beautiful tree is really all you need. Chinoiserie is not typically associated with Christmas, but we think it pairs beautifully with holiday color schemes. In fact, we love to mix blues into our holiday decor.

2. Pick a theme …

Feature several unifying elements on your tree and then fill in the rest with personal and collected ornaments. For example, layer ribbons, a collection of matching ornaments, feathers, etc., over the lights and before the individual ornaments. If you own lots of ornaments, opt for several trees throughout your home, each with different themes instead of piling it all onto one tree.

3. Make guests feel welcome …

Beat the doldrums of dark afternoons with lots of candles—most should be nonscented—and fires in the fireplace. Focus on the Danish concept of hygge and put out warm throws.
