Setting the Stage
Society Editor Gloria Zigner’s monthly recap of the county’s top charity events, including a screening of “The Bourne Legacy” at Fashion Island that netted $158,000 for the Hoag Hospital Foundation.

Coast Lines
The Neighborhoods page goes off the beaten path in downtown Huntington Beach. O.C. Answer Man explains the history of all those streets named Chapman. Books reviews the second children’s book by James Doti, president of Chapman (!) University. Perfect Getaway takes you to the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Stat Sheet gives you the numbers on Orange County’s harp-playing Miss America hopeful. Deconstruction gets inside one of the amazing equine puppets from “War Horse” at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. On the Market shows you the wide open spaces of Peters Canyon. We also highlight seven don’t-miss January happenings on our events page.

O.C. Style
The monthly Finds page shows how studs went girly. Hot Shop visits Rolling Greens nursery in SoCo Collection in Costa Mesa. And Tastemakers gets retro with Alex Forsythe, who has opened Analog, a shop specializing in vinyl records, turntables, and handmade music accessories, also in Costa Mesa.

Dining
Our bigger and better dining section this month features a Main Course review of Mare Culinary Lounge in Laguna Beach, the latest addition to chef Alessandro Pirozzi’s growing chain of Italian standouts. And Rediscovery takes you back to Bluewater Grill in Newport Beach and Tustin, where a lighter, brighter menu sparkles with new techniques. In the expanded section, we also get Behind the Counter with Dennis Horton of Back-Bay Tavern. Our O.C.’s Best column introduces eight great vegan restaurants where the animal-free option is more of a tasty alternative rather than a political statement. The Global Diner, Miles Clements’ page about global dining in the county, introduces you to joys of Indian thalis.
