It’s hard to think of a better time to shop for Dad in Orange County, with the recent arrival of so many men’s clothing stores. The latest is Suitsupply, the Dutch retailer that opened its flagship O.C. store in December at Fashion Island. Since its founding in Amsterdam in 2000, the chain has built quite a following with custom-fit, high-quality suits at reasonable prices.
It also sells “everything from boardshorts to tuxedos,” says store manager Derek Bullen—but the on-trend (but not trendy) suiting is its namesake, along with maximum three-day alterations provided by on-site tailors working in an open space in the center of the shop.
“Custom ($639 and up) and made-to-measure suits ($999 and up) take four to six weeks,” Bullen says, though the majority are sold off the rack ($399 and up). Depending on the suit, you can choose among 70 to 3,000 fabrics, mostly from Italy’s benchmark fabric mills. “We go directly to our sources, and we have our own factories. We control our entire process so customers get everything upfront, and we can keep our prices low.”
O.C.’s long active presence on Suitsupply’s website pretty much guaranteed us a local outpost. “These are men who like finer fabrics and want something a little more unique,” Bullen says.
