Over the years, The Red Balloon has been tethered to various locations in Westcliff Court. But in April, when owner Janice Greenwood expanded to two spaces in the Newport Beach center, it allowed her to better spotlight her popular women’s lines while still showcasing the children’s wear that gave the shop its name. Who knows how many new customers it’ll bring, but it’s certain her feel-good pieces from Milly, CP Shades, Enza Costa, ATM, and Pas de Calais will hold their attention. As will the Cornetti sandals and jewelry from designers such as Suzanne Kalan.
“What we choose for women’s wear, we also choose for children—classic, with a current twist,” she says. “Our brands have a comfort edge to them.”
Indeed they do, but without sacrificing style. Many of the women’s lines offer children’s clothing as well, alongside Tocoto Vintage, Stella McCartney Kids, and Scotch & Soda Kids, in sizes preemie to 14. Gift items from Meri Meri are also a draw, and home accessories were added after customers kept asking to buy the pillows and pony-hair stools in the dressing rooms. At the adjacent smaller shop run by Greenwood’s daughter, Olivia, you’ll find denim and loungewear.
If success is understanding who your customer is, Greenwood has an edge, having known most since they were babies. “Now they’re having babies of their own!” she says.
