Rags & Stones in San Juan Capistrano is a boutique that makes you feel instantly at home. Its casual chic vibe invites browsing and chatting with owner Melissa Hudson, above, and resident stylist Raegan Centala.
Opened last year, the shop sits off a brick walkway in the town’s historic center, with a view of the bell tower at the mission. It carries a tastefully curated mix of edgy boho styles, folk jewelry, home goods, even art. Hudson’s Orange County-based brands include handmade, colorful printed tops and pants by Mahana & Mint ($65), vegan “leather” Big Buddha bags ($70 to $150), and art work by Karen Petty ($3,200 to $4,000), as well as one-of-a-kind black diamond pieces by jewelry designer Trisha Dunn ($95 to $850). Hudson, a Dana Point resident who previously owned stores in Long Beach’s Belmont Shore and in Pacific Palisades, chose this spot because she thought the area lacked this kind of boutique—a place where local women could drop in before a party and get help pulling together the perfect look.
“One of my favorite moments is when a client tells me about the compliments she received wearing an outfit we put together,” she says. “This is why I love what I do.”
