J ZHOU ORIENTAL CUISINE

A local favorite for dim sum, this restaurant celebrates Lunar New Year with poon choi, a special hot pot dish packed with prawns, abalone, and sea cucumber. Order it along with shu mai and har gow (for prosperity and wealth) and pan-fried noodles with beef or seafood (for longevity). Enjoy your feast while admiring the dramatic chandeliers and paintings in the lavishly decorated dining room. 2601 PARK AVE., 714-258-8833

STOWAWAY

A long list of retro cocktails draws the crowds at this tiki bar and restaurant in Union Market. Under a thatched-roof ceiling, bartenders sling boozy Mai Tais ($12) and Zombies ($13), along with modern updates such as the Coconut Cove: pineapple vodka mixed with coconut water ($12). Look for the special Lunar New Year drink—last year’s, the Plucky Ox, combined rum, bitters, lime and lemon juice, and prickly pear syrup. 2493 PARK AVE., 657-208-2088

CASA DEL SOL

The mariachi shows at this new restaurant are epic, and it’s no wonder: The owner, José Hernández, is a celebrated musician who has started two mariachi groups. One of them, the Grammy-nominated Mariachi Sol de México, performs Friday through Sunday, and a smaller ensemble takes the stage the rest of the week. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the traditional Mexican fare: enchiladas ($15), tacos ($23), burritos ($21),
and margaritas ($14). 2497 PARK AVE., 949-418-7088

HERMOSA TAQUERIA

Hand-pressed tortillas made in-house at this new taqueria provide the base for the tacos ($9 to $16) and burritos ($13) filled with citrus and lager-marinated carne asada; shrimp in smoked chile marinade; guajillo-rubbed birria; or achiote-marinated pork shoulder—all of which pair well with the classic margaritas ($8). Grab a seat at the bar for the best view of the dramatic painting of a flamenco dancer by local artist Cody RL Parole. 2493 PARK AVE., 657-660-5361
