The National Choreographers Initiative

A unique workshop for dance-makers, National Choreographers Initiative (NCI), is celebrating its 10th summer as a laboratory for creative experimentation. Directed by Molly Lynch, a UC Irvine dance professor and former artistic director of Ballet Pacifica, the program matches four choreographers with 16 dancers for three weeks of rehearsals. The
choreographers ply their craft without the pressure of having to produce a “finished” work. In 10 years, the program has gained an international reputation. These photos are selections from previous NCI dances. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, there will be two NCI concerts this summer at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. For the first, 8 p.m., July 13, Lynch has selected excerpted highlights of nine NCI pieces that received full productions elsewhere. In addition, an informal showing of the dances made by this year’s choreographers–David Fernandez, Susan McCullough, Kitty
McNamee, and Petr Zahradnicek—is scheduled for 8 p.m., July 27. For more information about both shows, go to thebarclay.org
