March is the month for our annual Kickass Women issue, timed to honor International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. This project is always a joy as we get to shine a light on incredible thinkers, leaders, and activists in O.C. Talking to these women and hearing their stories is my favorite part of the article and the luncheon at the historic Ebell Club of Santa Ana that coincides with it.
Throughout the year, we’re collecting suggestions and ideas about fantastic women who are making Orange County a better place to live. Readers get into the spirit as well and eagerly nominate folks we should consider. We already have some nominees for next year’s list! As we got into the reporting for this issue, I found myself jotting down words of wisdom and advice from women I admire. Here are a few tidbits I like to use as reminders:
- Bloom where you’re planted; be excellent in the job you’re in.
- Take care of yourself; always be sure to treat your needs as a priority.
- Be vulnerable; let people see your whole self— don’t hide to protect your ego.
- Find the people who know the things you want to learn.
- There’s no such thing as “good stuff.” Every day is a special occasion.
- We do what we see more than what we’re told.

Some of this came from last year’s panelists at the luncheon, and some came from this year’s honorees as we interviewed them. The trait that stands out most to me among this year’s Kickass Women is the breathtaking drive and commitment on display. That fierce motivation is contagious, and I hope you will be as inspired as I am as you flip through the pages bursting with amazing people in our midst. Gathering shared experiences and celebrating our community is Orange Coast’s goal in every issue, and this subject is always one close to my heart.
