School lunch will never be the same—and that’s the point

While British chef Jamie Oliver continues his high-profile campaign for better food for schoolchildren, Orange County has one of its own quietly pursuing a similar idea. Chef Azmin Ghahreman, owner of Sapphire Laguna and Sapphire Pantry in Laguna Beach, launched his Sapphire at School program in 2007 with the goal of providing high-quality, healthful food to schools. This Saturday, the company is sponsoring Sapphire Food Fare, an open-air open house at Laguna Niguel’s St. Anne School (a client of the program since 2009), showcasing not only its food service, but also the many suppliers, cultivated over years, that it depends on for ingredients, some of whom will have product for sale. Chefs will cook, and nutrition experts will impart knowledge during the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event, demonstrating that the two activities are complementary rather than mutually exclusive.
