When I stopped into Savory Spice Shop Saturday after visiting the Corona del Mar Farmers Market (one of the markets highlighted in the current Orange Coast, the Food Lovers Guide), I had a few spices on my list that were due for refreshment. The joy of fresh ground cumin cannot be underestimated. But more—and unexpected— joy awaited
Savory Spice now carries a selection of flours from Giusto’s, the venerable South San Francisco baking supplier. I’ve been mail ordering from Giusto’s for years. We celebrated finding their excellent organic 00 pizza and pasta flour at Savory Spice by making pizza on Sunday, with the kind of crisp, thin, just-the-right-amount-of-chew crust that the light, powdery flour delivers—the 00 denotes an extremely fine grind, rather than a protein level. Clearly, I’m not the only one who knows this is big. Savory Spice owner Laura Shute told me that the double-zero is by far the most popular Giusto’s item she carries, followed by the company’s 6-grain pancake mix. The Giusto’s products are also available at Shute’s Savory Spice Stop in Costa Mesa’s The OC Mix, and both stores have added other made-in-California items like Blue Chair Fruit preserves from Oakland and Stick Figure Salsa from Indio.
