I’m partial to the La Habra El Cholo location—probably because my family’s been eating there since I was a child—but I was happy to take a look at the new El Cholo in Anaheim Hills when invited to a preview before it opened last week. (There’s a third in Irvine.) I love that the Salisbury family, who also owns the Cat and the Custard Cup in La Habra and the Cannery in Newport Beach, continues to invest in Orange County.
Or maybe it was just those nachos. El Cholo has always had the bar-none, hands-down best version of this seemingly simple preparation, called Carmen’s Original Nachos on the menu, a bargain at $7.50. Of course they’re based on great chips, but at least part of the credit must go to aged cheddar cheese. A shared platter of these, with guacamole, salsa, and a margarita, could be the perfect meal. Although, it’s possible their cheese enchiladas are the perfect meal… might be best to get the Fiesta Platter, a multi-item greatest-hits selection, for two or four ($11/$19), and cover all the bases. An excellent margarita alternative is their special L.A. Lemonade ($10), which makes very easy drinking, considering its fresh lemonade base is spiked with three kinds of tequila.
