DTSA’s Civic Is Gone, But There’s MAR to Come

A new project in the soon-to-open 4th Street Market will feature familiar Civic flavors among MAR creations

Orange Coast dining critic Gretchen Kurz gave downtown Santa Ana’s new restaurant, Civic, a positive review in our January issue. So it came as a surprise to many when the restaurant closed Jan 5.

“Unfortunately, Civic was outgrowing the location,” says owner Jon Melendez. “There were many updates necessary, which the location couldn’t accommodate.” Not that he’s leaving the game—in fact, Melendez is working on a second restaurant, MAR, in the much-anticipated 4th Street Market slated to open mid-February. You may have guessed MAR comes from “mariscos,” and that the emphasis will be on seafood. More specifically, Melendez says, it will be Asian-Latin seafood, with dishes like poke, ceviche, and seafood cocktails, along with tacos and “many of the same great flavors customers were used to at Civic.” He also promises vegetarian and paleo menu options. (That’s ahi-salmon-shrimp poke on black cashew rice in the photo.) And there’s more…

Civic could return. Melendez is seeking a location better suited to the restaurant’s concept. If he finds what he’s looking for, the neighborhood favorite could be back later this year.
