Little Sparrow is out, to the sadness of downtown Santa Ana diners. What’s in? Black Box, from the same owners and in the same space, serving Today’s Favorite Menu: amped-up burgers and craft cocktails and beer.
The two-part DTSA building has a ton of vintage charm both front and back, and it sounds like its possibilities will be exploited even more than before. As Black Box, the window-lined front room on the corner of Main and Third streets is “modeled after the idea of a public house—someplace to hang with friends,” according to owner Bruce Marsh. There’s casual counter service for the aforementioned burgers. In the back, the comfortable bar is “darker, blacker, and sexier than before,” Marsh says.” “The whole vibe feels more rock ‘n’ roll—in fact, the menu is designed as rock ‘n’ roll posters.”
Does Marsh have a music background? “Nope,” he says. “Just a good, solid love of playing great music loud enough to make you feel good.” Burgers, beer, and rock music? That’s a kind of back to basics people can get behind.
