I’m always saying Orange County’s an exciting place for food. Not surprisingly, It’s also a busy incubator of cookbooks—especially the kind that celebrate super-fresh O.C.-style cooking, influenced by the incredible bevy of gorgeous produce we have at our fingertips year-round.
Remember the modern whole-foods cooking of Dana Point resident and food blogger Sara Forte? Her book, “The Sprouted Kitchen” (Ten Speed Press, 2012), went on to get a 2013 James Beard Foundation award nomination—a huge honor for a first-time author. And, I loved the new book from Cathy Thomas, award-winning Orange County Register columnist. Her “50 Best Plants on the Planet” (Chronicle Books, $30) is attracting attention from all quarters, including the Wall Street Journal.
This fall, look for another contender. It’s “Bountiful: Recipes Inspired By Our Garden” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, $35) by Diane Cu and Todd Porter, better known as rock-star food bloggers and photographers White on Rice Couple. The Costa Mesa duo’s book features the bounty of their stupendous home garden in recipes and photos. (I expect there’ll be some cute-dog content, too—Cu and Porter are clearly potty over their pooches.) Out on October 1, “Bountiful” is available for pre-order on Amazon. You can read more about the book in this blog post from Cu and Porter, and try a recipe for roasted strawberry scones.
