Spread over 21,500 square feet, Zillow’s Orange County office—located in Irvine—reflects how established the start-up company has grown and incorporates a Southern California vibe through its interiors.
Inspired by Orange County’s hidden gems and global architecture, design and planning firm Gensler used reclaimed barn wood planks, concrete flooring, and black framed glass storefronts to create a laid-back yet elegant atmosphere in the lobby, reception, game room, training room, executive boardroom, and café. Industrial and urban at the same time, this workspace evokes the local identity of surf, bike, skate, sun, and fun.
The project was submitted to the 2019 AIAOC Design Awards program, which honors the exceptional commitment of its member architects who imagine contemporary solutions to the evolving needs of our living and working environments.
Jaimelynn Banaban Shah, Design Director and Senior Associate at Gensler, shares her best tips for designing an ideal home office.
- Pick timeless functional furniture pieces. Having furniture that is timeless gives flexibility to personalize a workspace at any given time.
- Personalize the space with finishes and accessories. Personalized spaces should inspire and evoke creativity and empowerment.
- Have access to natural light. Studies show that natural light can significantly improve health and wellness, leading to be more productive.
- Connection is important. Make sure you have the proper technology connections and equipment you need that are easily accessible in different locations of your workspace. Having the flexibility and option of when and where to work empowers people to do their best.
- Furniture layout is key. The placement of your office furniture should make your job easier. It’s all about personal preference. Do you like to look out the window throughout your day? Do you prefer having a more personal space that is tucked away? The layout should have the ability to support various types of tasks.
