Grab Your Boards: International Surfing Day Is June 20

The Surfrider Foundation’s International Surfing Day is happening next Friday in Orange County—and across the globe. You don’t have to surf to enjoy the celebration. The nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of our oceans is sponsoring an international waterways photo contest while our local chapters host a couple of events.

It’s Greek to Me!

If gyros, stuffed grape leaves, spanakopita, and an abundance of wine are on your list of favorite things, Orange County's 36th annual "A Taste of Greece" festival is the place to be June 27 through 29th at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine. The festival is a Greek party: live music, authentic Greek dancing lessons—the wine will help with that—and boutique booths reminiscent of the Plaka, a well-known historical neighborhood of Athens. You'll even find authentic recipes for traditional Greek dishes, delicious pastries, and a wine "Taverna" offering Greek wine and beer.

American Wine Story Premieres at Newport Beach Film Festival

The documentary, “American Wine Story,” is about people leaving their day jobs to risk following their dreams in the wine industry. But the heartfelt focus of the movie is Jimi Brooks. As the movie producers were interviewing many winemakers and growers, they kept hearing about the story of Jimi Brooks, a renowned winemaker who founded Brooks Winery in the Willamette Valley in 1998, but passed away in 2004 at the age of 38 from an aortic aneurysm. Subsequently, winemakers from all over the Willamette Valley gave their time to help save the winery, and the following year, a consortium was formed and the winery bequeathed to Brooks’ son, Pascal, who was 8 when his father died, becoming the youngest winery owner in the world.
