Now that we’ve officially entered October, I’ve been in the mood for some heartier cocktails, and I’ve got just the place and the fix for those seeking a little fall spirit. A Newport classic since 1926, the former Arches—now A Restaurant—with its low lighting, cozy bar, and plush booths, provides the perfect ambience for enjoying some craft cocktails.
One of film legend John Wayne’s favorite establishments—and supposedly a few other posthumous customers that staff members claim still haunt the place—customers can sit in the same booth where Wayne used to enjoy his tipple, right next to the roaring fire. This is the season for warming cocktails, and for that reason I’m highlighting their richer libations: bourbon-based cocktails that are sure to keep you warm if the fire doesn’t suffice.
Check out the Hollywood at Last, made with Bulleit Bourbon, fresh grapefruit juice and honey, for a cocktail that’s subtly spicy and sweet, or if you prefer something bittersweet, the True Grit, made with Duke Bourbon, Amaro Abano and bitters, certainly stands up to its namesake, and is perfect for fall.
