A few weeks ago, I was introduced to Orange County-based Shmakee, a line of spicy pickled foods that elevates cocktail party bites and beverages. The company’s newest creation—for the ultimate spicy Bloody Mary—is Bloody Tonic, a blend of apple cider vinegar infused with garlic, onion, horseradish, and habanero peppers. It’ll be released early next year.
Shmakee reflects the backgrounds of husband-wife founders Cristina and Michael Friedman. “Growing up in a Jewish home outside Cleveland, Ohio, and having a mother who was born and raised in Mexico, both pickles and spicy were ingrained in my being,” Michael says.
Of course their pickled eggs, green tomatoes, and crispy pickles can also be enjoyed on their own when not a garnish for your Bloody Mary. Look for the brand at various locations, including Pacific Ranch Market, Irvine Ranch Market, Bristol Farms, and Marbella Farmers Market. Check out the recipe below to make your own Shmakee Spicy Bloody Mary at home.
Shmakee Spicy Bloody Mary
8 ounces (1 cup) plain tomato juice
1 shot Shmakee Bloody Tonic (1 shot of juice from each of the pickled products can be substituted)
1 to 2 shots vodka (depends on your preference)
Mix all ingredients and serve over ice in a tall glass. Optional additions include: salt, a dash of Worcestershire, celery sticks, or whatever garnishes you like.
