Just mention the name DAOU winery to those in the know, and the reaction is universal. “They are the best; they treat everyone who works there well.” “Oh those brothers are so great!” “Their place in Paso Robles is amazing.” All that, plus you can always count on a solid bottle of wine from the Daou brothers.
Today, the company releases its sixth iteration of the Soul of a Lion flagship.
Soul of a Lion is named for Joseph Daou, the DAOU proprietors’ late father. Every vintage has been rated more than 90 points, and the 2017 might be the best yet. Aged for 22 months in new French oak, the wine’s black currant and vanilla notes are abundant, and the smooth tannins extend the finish. Just sniffing it is for a few minutes is pure delight.
If you need inspiration for Valentine’s Day with your wine-loving sweetheart, this vintage will be available in Orange County at Montage Laguna Beach and Pelican Hill Resort. If you prefer a bottle to enjoy at home, Ali Coyle, the wine director at Wineworks for Everyone in Mission Viejo, says she should have it later this week. Selanne Steak Tavern will also carry the 2017 Estate Soul of a Lion, likely as soon as next week. Or try Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa.
