‘Sweetbitter,’ O.C. Author’s Bestselling Novel, Premieres on TV

“You will develop a palate” is a fitting tagline for “Sweetbitter,” a half-hour drama premiering on Starz on May 6. It’s based on the bestselling novel by Stephanie Danler about a 22-year-old woman who moves to New York City, gets a job as a “backwaiter” in a celebrated fine-dining restaurant, and learns about wine, food, lust, and love.

Danler, who grew up in Rossmoor, is a writer and executive producer for the series. She got her first job at Walt’s Wharf in Seal Beach and went on to work at Danny Meyer’s Union Square Cafe in Manhattan.
