Casa Romantica Presents Live Tango, Opera, & Shakespeare In Their Seaside Gardens

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is known for its world-class art and cultural events, but what truly makes its events special is the way artists and performers use the historic site. Built in 1927, the Spanish revival estate boasts beautiful architecture, handmade tiles, expansive gardens, and sweeping ocean views which immerse guests into the performance in a way a normal theater experience cannot. This Spring, the Casa is proud to present robust site-specific programming including promenade-style opera performances, a romantic evening of tango dance set to live music, and Shakespearian theater.

A live open-air tango performance with renowned choreographers from So You Think You Can Dance as well as Dancing with the Stars, Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo, will take place in the historic courtyard under the stars accompanied by live tango musicians.

Executive Director Amy Behrens says, “Casa Romantica is one of the only places in Orange County that is able to host such a well-rounded program of concerts and performances in such a safe manner, set outdoors in our beautiful seaside gardens.”

An original concept opera called Opera Through the Seasons will have guests travel the property “through the seasons” featuring ornate floral sets, gardens, and live opera. The stars of the performance, Sopranos Liv Redpath and Andrea Zomorodian,  both have incredible resumes including performances at Metropolitan Opera, Disney Concert Hall, and Carnegie Hall as well as recordings for Star Wars, Outlander, and the live-action Mulan film. Liv Redpath says what excites her most about performing at Casa Romantica is, “the warmth of the audience and the chance to curate another concert to fit this beautiful space.”

Casa Romantica is also partnering with the Southern California Shakespeare Festival Guild to present two site-specific Shakespeare classics, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest, using the historic home and gardens as living sets to bring these iconic works to life.

“Shakespeare’s command of the English language – his use of literary devices and of iambic pentameter, which has the rhythm of the heartbeat, all contribute to exciting theatre, ” says director of the Southern California Shakespeare Festival Guild, Sam Robinson. “The house and the grounds of Casa Romantica are a perfect backdrop to Shakespeare’s plays and we enjoy the opportunity to create new performances that are site-specific both inside and outside Casa Romantica!”

Casa Romantica’s beauty and expansive gardens not only serve as a unique setting for performing arts but also a safe place for people to enjoy in-person events. Tickets are available but limited; purchase online or call to make your reservations and experience the arts at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens this Spring.
