Take Advantage of O.C.’s Weather with Your Own Backyard Oasis

You’ll have a hard time finding a pool like this one anywhere else in Orange County. Enjoy the warm summer weather relaxing by this stunner, with a rippling waterfall more than 15 feet tall as a backdrop, a bright deck punctuated by chevrons of grass, an ocean-view spa the next level up, and a detached guest casita that can double as a pool house. The graphic decking is repeated on an additional patio with an outdoor kitchen and an in-ground trampoline. Built in 1982, this contemporary home has six bedrooms, 6.5 baths, and four wine fridges in the kitchen as well as all-new stainless-steel appliances. It also has three levels, glass walls, solar power, a home theater, and a gym with a sauna and steam room.

Wisdom From a Pool Expert
Rachel Ferguson is the director of operations at Stoneface Inc., a family-owned company that creates artificial rockscaping for pools, zoos, and amusement parks.

Safety first …
The best safety precautions are to have at least two barriers to entry. This can be a combination of a pool cover or net so that small children or pets cannot fall in, alarms on every door leading to the pool area, a wave-motion sensor that detects movement in the pool, or a self-closing gate.

Extra, extra …
The most unique pool project we’ve worked on was a cave that involved two slides, four waterfalls, a bathroom, a locker room, a living room, and a sauna. The total project cost $1 million.

Building a habitat …
Stoneface has worked with Dolphinaris in Scottsdale, Ariz., and The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Utah. The rock features differ depending on the animal’s natural habitat. We work with animal curators at the zoos and aquariums to come up with the best designs for the animals. —As told to Chelsea Raineri
