Must-Try of the Week: 2012 Whispering Angel Côtes de Provence Rosé
Summer is upon us and nothing is more refreshingly appropriate than a good chilled rosé. Its popularity is in the pink, so to speak, with imported examples showing a 28 percent sales increase from 2011 to 2012. This angelic sipper is from Château D’esclans, arguably the best rosé producer on earth. Whispering Angel is the winery’s entry level rosé (the Château’s limited production cult wine, Garrus Rosé, sells for $90), but it dazzles in its own right. Composed of grenache, cinsault, syrah, mourvedre, and vermentino, it is delicate but flavorful, offering aromas and flavors of fresh strawberries, raspberries, peaches, and melon, with a slight hint of spice. Soft and clean on the palate, the demurely colored wine leaves behind just a whisper of fruit on the refreshing finish. Perfect with lamb kebobs from the grill or seared teriyaki tuna steaks.
