Must Try Wine of Week: 2011 Twomey Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

The 2011 growing season in the Russian River Valley was the coolest and wettest in recent memory. The result of this was fully ripe grapes at lower sugar levels with fresh acidity. Grapes for this wine were sourced from three sustainably farmed vineyards in the Middle Reach area along Westside Road known as the “Rodeo Drive” of pinot noir. Aged 12 months in 55 percent new French Burgundy oak barrels. Bing cherry, red berries, holiday spice, potpourri, and subtle oak all sing in harmony in this terrific wine. The mid-palate attack of cherries and cola, in harmony with the silky texture, nearly brings you to your knees. The well-ripened fruit is framed by just the right amount of acidic tension to give the wine plenty of vim and vigor. This wine is a great expression of pinot noir from a once-in-a-lifetime vintage in California. Twomey is part of the family of Silver Oak Cellars. A superb food wine that compliments grilled skirt steak with wilted bacon slaw, or roasted salmon with summer succotash. The wine’s vibrancy combined with very tame tannins make it a superb aperitif as well. Available in-store or online at Total Wine & More,, and Hi-Time Wine Cellars, Costa Mesa,, for $43.

It’s gratifying to see that the restaurant, which promotes a healthy diet and prides itself in seasonally inspired cooking with every item on the menu less than 475 calories, considers wine an important part of a wholesome lifestyle.
