Travel: Spring Fling in Keukenhof Gardens, The Netherlands

The days are longer, the weather is warmer … so how to celebrate? An exemplar of European culture, venerable, bathed in the watery sunlight of a Vermeer.

Keukenhof is translated as “kitchen garden,” a perfect example of Dutch understatement. It truth, Keukenhof is the world’s largest flower garden—79 color-saturated acres—tended by an army of gardeners, redesigned and replanted yearly with more than 7 million bulbs. This year its designers are paying homage to the Dutch tulip mania of the 17th century. Guests can watch flower arranging demonstrations while snacking on pannekoeken (traditional Dutch pancakes dusted with powdered sugar), or stroll through any of the seven themed “inspirational gardens.” It’s a fantastic place for kids, with a playground, maze, and petting zoo. Adult admission is €15 ($20 at current exchange rates); kids get in for half that.
