Hot Shop: Popping With Petals

Beauty is in the details of this small space

Petals and Pop would be at home in a Paris street scene. Blooms and foliage spill onto the sidewalk from old aluminum buckets and vintage German pickling jars. Inside, a floor-to-ceiling library ladder slides along the shelves of this flower and home goods store, providing access to vases, table linens, garden and kitchen tools, specialty chocolates, and cookbooks. “The store has a modern heirloom feel,” says owner Theresa Anderson, above. “Modern designs with vintage pieces.” The Seal Beach shop’s name stems from the complimentary Champagne she pops for brides-to-be planning their wedding flowers, as well as the vintage soda pops she sells, such as Boylan root beer. She opened the store last August with husband John after leaving her career in pharmaceutical sales. The mother of two, who was trained and inspired by the Little Flower School in Brooklyn, found a space adjacent to Tankfarm & Co., the men’s boutique her husband co-owns with his brother Mike.

“I love mixing cabbage and kale with garden roses and chocolate basil,” says Anderson, whose arrangements seem lifted from Victorian paintings. Ceramic containers by Heirloom Home & Studio resemble antique French fruit baskets. You’ll also find table service, maple cutting boards from Blackcreek Mercantile, and printed jute tote bags. Weekly bouquets start at $20, bridal bouquets at $250, and home goods range from $6 to $200.
